The programme was first curated by Alla Gadassik in partnership with Quickdraw Animation Society (Calgary, Canada) and screened as part of the eighteenth Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival (GIRAF) in November 2022. A second screening was arranged at the Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth (New Zealand) in December 2022. Both screenings were preceded by the curator’s presentation, which linked the material science and culture of graphite to its role in animation history.

Alongside curating the film programme, Gadassik served as a jury member at the GIRAF festival. Animate Materials Workshop senior research-creation assistant Cameron Kletke also attended the festival to present and discuss her film you feel soft (2022), which was produced as part of Kletke’s research with the workshop. Kletke’s presentation was a Calgary homecoming for the artist, and her father – who composed and performed the score for you feel soft – was also in attendance.

Kletke embraces the textural variation of graphite while exploring themes of intimacy
